One work or phrase for doing something which will take a lot of time but not a lot of benefit

Trying to write an email where one of my colleague is asking to do something which is going to take a lot of time and effort without a lof of benefit.



I was going to write something like "it would be impracticable and inefficient "



any other suggestions?
