How to disable service messages in console mode?

After my console mode Ubuntu server has started, I keep receiving on tty1 a slew of service messages, such as udev starting, daily apt activities, etc.

I've tried mesg n to make this stop, but it keeps on. It makes it hard to work and forces me to login to something else than tty1. This shouldn't be needed.
