Using article “an” before LSTM?

I was reading through my academic articles then I faced up with using "an" before LSTM stands for Long Short-Term Memory Network.

At the first, I thought It's a misspelling but as I was going forward, I observed much more instances!

Based on my knowledge, article "an" is used when the first sound of nouns is a vowel sound on the other hand "a" should be used.

I am interested to know what's wrong and why writers use "an" instead of "a"!

  • When "LSTM" is pronounced letter-by-letter, it starts with the vowel sound /ɛ/. See also Why use “an” before a word that starts with a “L”
