Apt-lock unavailable on fresh system , chrome showing ads on ad free websites , a malware?

-1

I was working on Chrome for Ubuntu for a long time , but from last two three days it started behaving weird , I was seeing ads on my google search , for example I searched "hello" it showed adele's song and after 2-3 seconds the page without getting reloaded updated itself to many ads. I was browsing wikipedia and whenever I clicked ads popped up and as everyone know it's an ad free website , on Valadoc also same happened.
[Screenshot of google search is attached]
Weird thing about google search was that those ads did not have any ad marking on them and that is not normal as google do marks ads as "advertisement" which are ads.

I booted up my system fresh today and this happened to me for the very first time I opened synaptic and it said that it does not get apt lock , while I did not run any apt process so why and after my system was freshly booted up. I just wanted to know is it some kind of malware and if so then how can I detect it enter image description here

Have you any browser extensions enabled ? If, then try to disable all and check if the problem disappears.

For the synaptic issue, wait a few minutes and try again. Unattended-upgrades or update-manager might be working in the background soon after boot.

  • @user535733 I kind of had this rough idea also and looked into it and found python 3's unattended upgrade but why this one now , I mean it was there from almost an year and I never faced this one

  • Your question contains two unrelated issues. One could be a browser issue possibly because of "unprotected" browsing. The other, as pointed out by user535733, is quite common if you use a package manager or even the command line for apt-related actions shortly after a system is booted.
