USB thumb drive fails to remount after unplug

0

I am deploying a headless system based on Ubuntu 16.04.2 LTS, and it needs to tolerate hot unplugging and replugging of USB thumb drives. This works two or three times, but after that the drives fail to be mounted.

It shows up on lsblk (as sda/sda1 or sdb/sdb1) but when running gvfs-mount -o to monitor events, no activity is shown.

in /var/log/syslog, I get the following messages on a successful mount:
UPDATE: this is with two thumbdrives in two USB ports, which I thought was irrelevant. When using a single drive I did not get the failure. After it fails once, neither drive will automount until the system is rebooted.
