What is a one word opposite of “suggests”? [on hold]

When using "suggests" to mean "provides evidence for", is there a single word opposite? As in "the clothing style suggests a teenager" vs. "the clothing style Xs an adult". Refutes is too strong in my view, I want to provide evidence against something, not rule it out.

  • Perhaps disproves, denies, etc.?
