How can I get my desktop to work after renaming it and Ubuntu recreating it?

I changed my desktop name, and then Ubuntu automatically recreated a system desktop again. Now my desktop isn't working. I can't move stuff out of it. I can move stuff into it and open it in the file browser, but the desktop icons aren't showing up. I'm using version 16.04

    Welcome to Ask Ubuntu. It's not clear to me what you're asking? Did you change your ~/Desktop folder's name (ie. the Desktop/ folder in your /home/user directory)? or your system's hostname? or something else (such as a label that appears on the top of your panel?) Please clarify.

If you changed the name of your ~/Desktop directory then your system doesn't 'see' that directory anymore.
In order to change the default names of the directories in your $HOME you need to edit the file $HOME/.config/user-dirs.dirs

This is mine with default values :

$ cat $HOME/.config/user-dirs.dirs

# This file is written by xdg-user-dirs-update
# If you want to change or add directories, just edit the line you're
# interested in. All local changes will be retained on the next run
# Format is XDG_xxx_DIR="$HOME/yyy", where yyy is a shell-escaped
# homedir-relative path, or XDG_xxx_DIR="/yyy", where /yyy is an
# absolute path. No other format is supported.
#
XDG_DESKTOP_DIR="$HOME/Escritorio"
XDG_DOWNLOAD_DIR="$HOME/Descargas"
XDG_TEMPLATES_DIR="$HOME/Plantillas"
XDG_PUBLICSHARE_DIR="$HOME/Público"
XDG_DOCUMENTS_DIR="$HOME/Documentos"
XDG_MUSIC_DIR="$HOME/Música"
XDG_PICTURES_DIR="$HOME/Imágenes"
XDG_VIDEOS_DIR="$HOME/Vídeos"

So if I want to change the 'Escritorio' dir to ANYELSE I would do :

XDG_DESKTOP_DIR="$HOME/ANYELSE"

Log out, log in and that's it :-)
