I am trying to create a ubuntu 18.04.02 VM using kvm-qemu on top of ubuntu 18.04.02. After the installation and rebooting, the booting process hangs in between with just a blank screen and a blinking underscore.

I have used following commands to install ubuntu 18.04.02:

Create Image:

  1. sudo qemu-img create /var/lib/libvirt/images/ubuntu18_04_02.img 30G

Install ubuntu using iso image:

  1. sudo qemu-system-x86_64 -enable-kvm -cpu host -hda /var/lib/libvirt/images/ubuntu18_04_02.img -boot d -cdrom /home/sushant/Downloads/ubuntu-18.04.2-desktop-amd64.iso -m 8G

Reboot the VM after installation:

  1. sudo qemu-system-x86_64 -enable-kvm -cpu host -hda /var/lib/libvirt/images/ubuntu18_04_02.img -m 8G

I tried other ubuntu 18.xx versions but to no avail. Using the same procedure, I am able to boot ubuntu 16.04 successfully.

Please advise what should be done.

  • I have had occasions where the 18.xx install boots to a black screen - Try using nomodeset as a kernel parameter, as outlined in https://askubuntu.com/a/162076/283721
