            On GRUB menu, select your Ubuntu boot entry, then press c to switch into 'Command line mode'.

            Run following command to open GRUB settings:

            sudo nano /etc/default/grub

            Next, look for line contained text GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT.

            GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"

            Remove the "quiet splash", then save the file. When you are ready to boot with your modified changes press Ctrl + X , and then Enterto save the file. You may exit the command line mode now.

            • It didn't work. I tried removing quite splash & adding nomodeset but after doing Ctrl + X it came back to the same screen. After removing quiet splash do i need to do anything else to save or Ctrl + X saves it & reboots it?

            • The above steps didn't help. I had to reinstall using a bootable disc. Since all my data was in the Home folder so i formatted root & boot but left home as it is and reinstalled Ubuntu 16.4. It's up & running now. Thanks for your suggestions.

            • After you edit /etc/default/grub, you have to run the 'update-grub' command to copy those changes into the grub menu/configuration files in /boot/grub. That's why the changes didn't seem to take effect.

                    The above steps didn't help. I had to reinstall using a bootable disc. Since all my data was in the Home folder so i formatted root & boot but left home as it is and reinstalled Ubuntu 16.4. It's up & running now. Thanks for your suggestions.

                    After you edit /etc/default/grub, you have to run the 'update-grub' command to copy those changes into the grub menu/configuration files in /boot/grub. That's why the changes didn't seem to take effect.
