SSH from outside Network

0

Trying to SSH into my ubuntu 18.04 from outside the network using my mac. I have done everything I could find online, but it just doesn't seem to work. This is what I have done,

  1. Set up ssh on ubuntu on the linux computer, so I can fully access it when on the same network

  2. Set up the linux computer to work on a different port, not 22, and set up port forwarding on the router to push a specific external port to that port I set for the computer

  3. Found the computers public IP address

Am I missing anything?

When I try to ssh it as:

ssh username_on_computer@pub_ip_adress -p port_number

it gives an error and says that the "Operation timed out".

  • You haven't missed anything. (In fact those are the same steps as I've taken, and my setup works.) If your router has a log, that is the point to start debugging. Does your router register incoming packets on port port_number? If you are pretty confident the port forwarding on the router works, you could set up tcpdump on the Ubuntu server to log incoming packets on the internal port.

  • Most likely this is related to setting up port forwarding in the router, and hence has nothing to do with Ubuntu. Since you have changed the ssh port, remember to restart the ssh server in the Ubuntu computer, so that the configuration changes take effect in the ssh server. If sudo service ssh restart does the trick. Let me know. I will write a full answer so that you can accept it. That will help others.

  • Did you test the SSH connection on the same LAN first? If it fails, then the problem is your SSH client or server settings. If it succeeds, then the problem is your router settings.

  • what is your port forwarding setting? can you give a screenshot or detailed setting?

  • Please edit your question and add the output of ssh -vv -p port_number username_on_computer@pub_ip_adress.
