Plugging in external hard drive leaves computer in GRUB rescue mode each time
I dual-boot Windows 10 and Ubuntu 18.10 on the computer's internal hard drive. I have an external solid state hard drive which contains no OSs or anything of the sort, but the mere act of plugging it in during regular use breaks GRUB. I can't be bothered to resolve this each time repetitively as the external is needed for demanding daily work. What's going on here and what is the solution?

What is the result of lsblk -f with your external disk plugged in? Is there any GUID collision?
