Overlayfs what does the none directive do?

.everyoneloves__top-leaderboard:empty,.everyoneloves__mid-leaderboard:empty,.everyoneloves__bot-mid-leaderboard:empty{ margin-bottom:0;
}

cd /tmp
mkdir lower upper workdir overlay
sudo mount -t overlay -o
lowerdir=/tmp/lower,
upperdir=/tmp/upper,
workdir=/tmp/workdir
none /tmp/overlay

It works but none /tmp/overlay the none directive on umount seems think its a mount and I am struggling to find out exactly what that directive does.
In some examples its 'overlay' rather than 'none' but why what?

if you do a df you see the file system as none?
