Ubuntu 16.04 reports only 3.2 GB RAM when 8 GB is installed

0

I have read many of the similar questions and have double checked all of the solutions that I found, but nothing seems to pertain to the facts of my situation.

I have an Core 2 Duo processor installed on an Intel DG965SS mother board. The bios reports 8 GB RAM installed memtest86 reports 8 GB RAM and tests it as good. The specs for the board say that it has an 82G965 graphics and memory controller hub (gmch). The specs for the board and the hub state that they support 8gb of ram, and indeed memtest86 sees all 8 GB. So, I don't think the issue is hardware related. Can anyone help me understand why the OS cannot see the same amount of memory that memtest86 can see??? I have Ubuntu 16.04 64-bit installed. I realize that the hardware is dated, but with the full memory available will satisfy the application for this PC.

Thanks in advance!

  • Are you sure the OS is 64-bit?

  • Yes, positive. I have Docker installed on this machine and Docker only works on a 64-bit os. So that removes any doubt that the os download may have been mis-labeled when saved.

  • I realize it maybe far fetched, but how many memory modules are there? If 2x 4GB, swap them and try again.

  • @WillemK There are 4 memory modules - 4 x 2GB

  • but did you swap any, just to see if it has any effect. Ok, ok, I know the memtest said 8GB, I'm just curious.
