'sudo telinit 5' and “Could not sync environment to dbus”
I'm currently running Kubuntu on my laptop (no Windows partition) and trying to learn how to use linux.
At the attempt to kill the GUI, 'sudo telinit 3' managed to switch it off. However, when I used 'sudo telinit 5' to restart the GUI, the system went blank and pop up a message "Could not sync environment to dbus". It won't do anything if I click 'okay' on the message but will lead me back to the Konsole if I press ctrl+alt+f6. Then if I reinsert the command 'sudo telinit 5', it will lead me to a blank page, with a flashing underscore bar on it but unable to type in anything. The only way I can get GUI back is to restart the laptop.
I'm not sure about the reasons for the error message and if there's any way to fix it. Any clarification will be much appreciated.

If you're trying to learn about modern Linux, then I suggest forgetting about legacy SysV run levels, and familiarizing yourself instead with systemd's targets e.g.systemd isolate multi-user.target/systemd isolate graphical.target. That being said, systemd provides a SysV compatibility layer that should work withtelinit- see for example freedesktop.org - runlevel so I don't know why it's not working for you
