I upgraded to 18.04, and my scanner doesn't work any more. And now I need it! An Epson Perfection V550 Photo, 32-bit Dell Dimension computer. It worked perfectly well with the pre-Beaver version without configuring or downloading anything. But now Image Scan tells me "Could not send command to scanner. Check the scanner's status." (Scanner is plugged in, power light is on.) Simple Scan tells me I need to install driver software. I went to Epson's site and the software seemed to install without error and I restarted Simple Scan, but Simple Scan still tells me I need to download driver software.

A sudo sane-find-scanner returned:

found USB scanner (vendor=0x04b8 [EPSON], product=0x013b [EPSON Scanner]) at libusb:001:005
could not fetch string descriptor: Pipe error
# Your USB scanner was (probably) detected. It may or may not be supported by
# SANE. Try scanimage -L and read the backend's manpage.

# Not checking for parallel port scanners.

# Most Scanners connected to the parallel port or other proprietary ports
# can't be detected by this program.

I don't know how to interpret that. But scanimage -L told me that no scanners were identified.

ImageView doesn't view images any more, either, although I can see them in ShotWell and Firefox. That might be unrelated. But I can't say I'm thrilled with 18.04.
