Sound not working from some applications

0

The sound stopped working about three days ago.

If I access the machine (Ubuntu 18) through ssh and run

aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav

It plays, but not if I login as another not sudo user.

If I play and .mp3 or .mp4 under the graphical interface, it works, but neither Firefox nor Chrome produce sound.

What's more, the Sound setting tab doesn't show sound coming from any applications, or any sound devices connected.

Right after the problem arose (under Ubuntu 14) and seeing that the sound bar refused to move, I updated to Ubuntu 18, now it moves, but doesn't have any effect on Firefox or I'm a bit lost at this stage.

Does anyone have an idea of where to go from here?
