“defer” vs “defer to”
As I understand
"defer" means "delay"
"they deferred the decision until February"
"defer to someone" means "trust and pass the task on someone"
I deferred to Brian on the question of what to serve at the party.
As I have picked up both of these meanings in books and vocabularies, I don't know if it is in use in normal people talks. Is it?
And what is more popular? I mean may there be age groups or areas where one use is more appropriate than the other.
Can I make a pan with the word like, without making myself looking bad:
I defer this task to you, my friends, but please do not defer it too much.
