Correct usage of “trading/exchanging one thing for another”
I want to state that "Some people trade/exchange X for Y", with the implication that it would be more advantageous to keep Y, but that they foolishly give Y away to gain X, which is less advantageous.
Example:
During the Standford marshmallow
experiment,
it was argued that children who traded a long-term benefit for
immediate gratification had worse life outcomes later in life.
Does the "trading/exchanging ... for ..." structure imply that one item is gained and the other given away by the order in which it is written? If so, what is the correct order?
Or would it be better to state it in another way? E.g.: trading away Y to gain X.
