mariadb not starting after default password reset

0

I am new to Linux and I am playing with installing Bacula I got to the point of installing mariadb and wanted to change the default password and followed the following steps:

  1. Stop the MySQL process
    service mysqld stop

  2. Once MySQL has stopped, restart it with the --skip-grant-tables option
    mysqld_safe --skip-grant-tables &

  3. Connect to MySQL using the root user.
    mysql -u root

  4. Once logged in, you should see the following prompt:
    mysql>

  5. mysql> use mysql;

  6. mysql> UPDATE user SET password=PASSWORD("YOUR NEW PASSWORD HERE") WHERE User='root';

  7. mysql> UPDATE user SET plugin="";

  8. mysql> flush privileges;

  9. mysql> quit

Now stop MySQL again:

  1. service mysqld stop

This is where the problem is when I go to restart the service it times out and fails. Why? Help. I can restart the server and the service is started but the new password does not work.

Now restart MySQL and test your new login.

  1. service mysqld restart

  2. mysql -u root -p
