DVD not detected?

1

As i insert a DVD in my drive (on a laptop) using Kubuntu 12.04, the DVD is not detected. The drive takes the DVD, I can hear it munching on it for a while, and then nothing. Even ejecting the DVD becomes a hassle, I need to do that at boot time otherwise the OS won't allow me to eject.
Kubuntu 12.04 used to read and mount the same DVDs just fine a week ago.

Edit: since I am able to boot from CD, can I safely assume the issue is not a hardware issue?

How can I fix this?

  • Content of /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf, and is it being detected in the BIOS?

  • I added the content of the file as requested. I was thinking indeed to try inserting the liveCD and boot to check if the drive works then. I will check the BIOS and return.

To be able to solve the problem, you must identify the problem : is it a hard or a soft problem ?

Is your DVD player connected with USB (internally) or with pci ? You shoud be able to see it in the output given by either lspci or lsusb in the terminal. If it doesn't appear any more here, there may probably be a hardware problem.

Last thing : since your computer is a laptop, you should be able to remove the DVD drive and insert it in another laptop to test it. This could be a nice start to know if the problem lies in the software or in the hardware (which I personally think it is).

Hope this helps,

Ben

  • Thanks. See added data in question. I cannot remove drive from laptop. I can perhaps try LiveCD and boot to see if the issue is OS or hardware based. Would that work?

in a console terminal type this :

sudo eject /dev/cdrom2

If it's working then your trouble is due to the fact that, for some reason, the cdrom is detected as second cdrom and you are having a bug.

Do you have various cdrom/dvdrom ? or a usb hard drive ?
