How do I find out which version and derivative of Ubuntu is right for my hardware in terms of minimal system requirements?

I am in the process of trying to find the right motherboard for my Unifi NVR Server build. The software is tested to run on Ubuntu Server 16.04 so I need to make sure my board is fully supported for the hardware.
I was looking at the Super Micro X10SRL-F board but see Super Micro only tested on Ubuntu Server 14.04. Has anyone used this motherboard on 16.04? I am new to Linux and not quite confident to know what is supported or not yet. Any help or feedback you can give would be appreciated.
