Installing slrn newsreader

I have slrn running on an Apple Mac which runs freebsd on it's terminal. When I installed slrn under Ubuntu I copied the config files across from the Mac, installed slrn using apt and got ready to go.
It doesn't work. I have the two files .bashrc and .slrnrc copied to / and the error message I get reads as:
Loading /usr/share/slrn/slang/slrn.sl
Reading startup file /etc/news/slrn.rc.slrn fatal error:
Unable to find a valid hostname for constructing your e-mail address.
You probably want to specify a hostname in your .slrnrc file.
Please see the "slrn reference manual" for full details.
Any help much appreciated.
My .slrnrc file reads in part:
"news.individual.net""peterjames""xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx"
set username "Peter"
set hostname "pfjames.co.uk"
set realname "Peter"
so I'm baffled.
