ubuntu snmpd ignores /etc/default/snmpd

0

i just spend a day trying to get snmpd working on Ubuntu 18 and wanted to document my experience. Also, there seems to be problems with the startup files and I would like to know where to post the bugs.

the issue in a nutshell is:
Ubuntu packages snmpd to start using systemd, which is fine, but the default config includes systemd files that are broke.

/lib/systemd/system/snmpd.service:
The original service def:

[Unit]

Description=Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) Daemon.

After=network.target

ConditionPathExists=/etc/snmp/snmpd.conf

[Service]

Environment="MIBSDIR=/usr/share/snmp/mibs:/usr/share/snmp/mibs/iana:/usr/share/snmp/mibs/ietf:/usr/share/mibs/site:/usr/share/snmp/mibs:/usr/share/mibs/iana:/usr/share/mibs/ietf:/usr/share/mibs/netsnmp"

Environment="MIBS="

Type=simple ExecStartPre=/bin/mkdir -p /var/run/agentx

ExecStart=/usr/sbin/snmpd -Lsd -Lf /dev/null -u Debian-snmp -g Debian-snmp -I -smux,mteTrigger,mteTriggerConf -f

ExecReload=/bin/kill -HUP $MAINPID

[Install]

WantedBy=multi-user.target

as you can see on the exec line, this will launch snmpd with a set of args but it seems to completely ignore /etc/default/snmpd (it took me hours to figure out why my changes to snmpd were not taking)

In order to make systemd work with snmpd AND read the /etc/default/snmpd file, i did this and it seems to be working:

[Unit]

Description=Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) Daemon.

After=network.target

ConditionPathExists=/etc/snmp/snmpd.conf

[Service]

PIDFile=/run/snmpd.pid

Type=forking

EnvironmentFile=-/etc/default/snmpd

ExecStartPre=/bin/mkdir -p /var/run/agentx

ExecStart=/usr/sbin/snmpd $SNMPDOPTS

ExecReload=/bin/kill -HUP $MAINPID

[Install]

WantedBy=multi-user.target

This seems to be a bug in how Ubuntu is packaging snmpd??? where should I report the bug to?
thanks
