“Hanging on” what does it mean?
This is from Aerosmith's "Livin' on the edge" song.
Something right with the world today
And everybody knows it's wrong
But we can tell 'em no or we could let it go
But I'd would rather be a hanging on
What does "hanging on" mean in this context ?

The lyrics are illiterate: "I'd would" is nonsense (although it appears in all the versions of the lyric I could find online). I suspect that "a hanging on" should really be "a-hanging on" because making a noun of "a hanging-on" makes no sense. But it's a song: who knows what they wanted it to mean?

@AndrewLeach I just listened to this song, and to be fair to Aerosmith it sounds, to me, like but I would rather be a-hanging on. I know that Google lyrics have same text as reproduced in this question. So, I posted a change-request to Google; I will keep an eye on it to see if Google respond!

Sake, have you tried websites like songmeanings.com/m/songs/view/6664 I think that they will give a broader view of the song. You don’t want to miss the wood for the trees. Also see johnnyfonts.com/2017/01/19/…
