Ubuntu memory question after clearing cache increased used memory

0

I had a question about clearning the memory cache in ubuntu. I noticed my wordpress sites are going very slowly and having trouble connecting to the mysql DB. I figured I would check the memory levels since we just moved two more over to this server, to see if there was some memory issues.

I checked the memory using the free -m command.

 free -m
total used free shared buff/cache available
Mem: 1998 562 878 103 557 1136
Swap: 0 0 0

I noticed there was a bit free and not much used, but the issues were there so I decided to clear up some memory from the cache.

echo 1 | sudo tee /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches
1

free -m
total used free shared buff/cache available
Mem: 1998 1355 365 103 278 355
Swap: 0 0 0

After running this some cached memory cleared out but the used memory spiked to a huge amount. Is this normal? Would this point to me needing more memory on the server since the usage rate went up so much?

Thanks for the help
