Why use Would have to in the past tense

I was watching the birdbox and there was a sentence i quite didnt understand which was this



"So that we would have to look at the creatures "



He was only explaining what was happening to him
But what would he use "would have to"
Its not like that would was said as used to



Can somebody please explain it to me
I just cant seem to find an answer to it
