Gigabyte X99 Gaming Motherboard. No sound from onboard soundcard

I have the a Gigabyte GA-X99 Gaming Motherboard and Ubuntu 18.04 with no sound from the onboard soundcard.
No errors and Ubuntu sees the sound output device but its silent. HDMI sound works OK so I have using that, but I am using a really shitty sounding Monitor. I have a reasonable 5.1 sound system, and an expensive set of 5.1 headphones, so I would really like the on board sound to work.
Nothing wrong with the hardware as Windows 10 runs it perfectly (dual boot Windows / Linux).
Can anyone else shed some light on this?
Gigabyte are not at all helpful as they just say"contact chip manufactures directly to get Linux drivers, but dont tell you what the chip is. I will be following that line next.
