GUI program to resize pdf documents and change their DPI
I see that LibreOffice Draw should be able to open a pdf and export it with options for changing quality and DPI resolution. But the high-resolution scanned pdfs that I have are not properly opened in this application (only the first page is imported) so I want to find a more specialized application.
I am not asking for a command line option at this point (my pdfs are so big that all that I tried in this way failed).

Script based on this branch by oriolpont and modified according to cipricus' suggestion.
Oriolpont's modified revision comes with a number of improvements:
- Hebrew translation by Yaron
- Multifile support based on changes by Edouard Saintesprit
- Several other bash tunings to make the script much safer (PID tempfiles, safer mode for GS, more initial checks)
Screenshot
Options
The options offered in the zenity GUI dialog correspond to these ghostscript
settings:
dPDFSETTINGS=/screen
(screen-view-only quality, 72 dpi images)
dPDFSETTINGS=/ebook
(low quality, 150 dpi images)
dPDFSETTINGS=/printer
(high quality, 300 dpi images)
dPDFSETTINGS=/prepress
(high quality, color preserving, 300 dpi
imgs)
dPDFSETTINGS=/default
(almost identical to /screen)
More options and fine tunning on the site:
http://milan.kupcevic.net/ghostscript-ps-pdf/
Source: Open Source command line tool for optimizing PDF
You can find some more information on the options used here. Oriolpont's README offers additional details on customizing the script to your needs.
Installation
The script depends on a number of packages. You can install them with:
sudo apt-get install ghostscript poppler-utils zenity
If you don't know how to install a Nautilus script, just follow this guide:
How can I install a Nautilus script?
Installation on alternate desktop environments
The script does not depend on any custom Nautilus variables and can be used with pretty much any file manager out there that supports custom menu actions. Please refer to your file manager's manual on how to install your script. XFCE-users can find a nice tutorial here.
Of course you can also launch the script from the command line. Basic usage:
compresspdf "filename.pdf"
Moonshiner
Overview
More advanced control over your PDF output can be achieved with Moonshiner, a GUI front end to ghostscript.
Installation
Moonshiner is not available from the official repositories. Unfortunately I wasn't able to find an official PPA, either. There's only this private PPA which hasn't been updated in a while. The .deb
archive available here should work on recent Ubuntu revisions, but don't take my word for it.
As far as I can see the safest way of installing moonshiner is directly from its source. To do so, first download the most recent revision:
svn co https://moonshiner.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/moonshiner/trunk moonshiner_svn
cd $HOME/moonshiner_svn/
Moonshiner depends on Python, PyGTK and Ghostscript. If these dependencies are satisfied (which they should be on a stock Ubuntu installation) you can proceed to install the application with:
sudo python setup.py install
Or with python's packet management tool (sudo apt-get install python-pip
):
python setup.py sdist
sudo pip install $HOME/moonshiner_svn/dist/moonshiner-1.1svn.tar.gz
Uninstalling moonshiner is a breeze with pip
:
sudo pip uninstall moonshiner
If you go with the first installation method you will have to remove all installed files manually.
Usage
After installation you should be able to launch Moonshiner from the dash or your preferred application launcher. The GUI is pretty self-explanatory. To modify a PDF you simply drag and drop the file onto the interface, change the settings you want and hit Go Moonshining!.
Three separate governors under the Images tab allow you to fine tune DPI and quality settings to your will:
I won't dive into the other settings here but I encourage you to consult the official documentation for any questions you might have.
Custom icon
I wasn't too fond of moonshiner's icon, so I created one of my own:
You can download the SVG here. The icon is based on the fantastic Faenza iconset and released under the same license (GNU/GPL).
(1) Moonshine is great; (2) i have found the cause of the error: in fact the script needs an adjustment to run in Xfce/Thunar (askubuntu.com/a/280623/47206): the line 150 should be replaced with:if [ -z "$pdf_file" ]; then
. Should I add that info into your answer or you prefer to do it?

@cipricus I had overlooked that nautilus reference, thank you! I managed to find a more updated revision of the script with multi-file support and edited my answer to include both your suggestion and the new script.

@cipricus One last update. I hate ugly icons, so I created a new one for moonshiner. Make sure to check it out!

Great answer!, but maybe it could be better to split the answer into two answers, one for the Nautlius-Script and one for Moonshiner. Esp. the last works great!

Ghostscript Commandline
That simple:
ps2pdf "argument.pdf"
It will generate argument.pdf.pdf
, a file that will be (on most cases) smaller than original one.
Nemo Script
Open a text editor and write:
ps2pdf "$*"
Save it to /home/youruser/.local/share/nemo/scripts, with a intuitive name, let's say "reduce PDF size"; no need to use file extension.
Then, apply chmod +x "reduce PDF size"
.
So, you just have to open Nemo, navigate to file, right click on PDF file, choose scripts, and then "reduce PDF size".
Side-effects: It does not recognize samba shares, generating a new corrupted file.

Screenshot
Options
The options offered in the zenity GUI dialog correspond to these ghostscript
settings:
dPDFSETTINGS=/screen
(screen-view-only quality, 72 dpi images)
dPDFSETTINGS=/ebook
(low quality, 150 dpi images)
dPDFSETTINGS=/printer
(high quality, 300 dpi images)
dPDFSETTINGS=/prepress
(high quality, color preserving, 300 dpi
imgs)
dPDFSETTINGS=/default

Original Source: https://launchpad.net/compress-pdf
Script based on this branch by oriolpont and modified according to cipricus' suggestion.
Oriolpont's modified revision comes with a number of improvements:
- Hebrew translation by Yaron
- Multifile support based on changes by Edouard Saintesprit
- Several other bash tunings to make the script much safer (PID tempfiles, safer mode for GS, more initial checks)
Screenshot
Options
The options offered in the zenity GUI dialog correspond to these ghostscript
settings:
dPDFSETTINGS=/screen
(screen-view-only quality, 72 dpi images)
dPDFSETTINGS=/ebook
(low quality, 150 dpi images)
dPDFSETTINGS=/printer
(high quality, 300 dpi images)
dPDFSETTINGS=/prepress
(high quality, color preserving, 300 dpi
imgs)
dPDFSETTINGS=/default
