ld -lcufft cannot find

OK,

So I bit the bullet and updated to 18.10. Trying to get my build env up and running, I run into the issue that /usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lcufft.

sudo ld -lcufft --verbose tells me:

attempt to open //usr/local/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libcufft.so failed

attempt to open //usr/local/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libcufft.a failed

attempt to open //lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libcufft.so failed

attempt to open //usr/x86_64-linux-gnu/lib/libcufft.so failed

attempt to open //usr/x86_64-linux-gnu/lib/libcufft.a failed

ld: cannot find -lcufft

Fine, so I add a cuda.conf to the /etc/ld.so.conf.d/ directory, and run sudo ldconfig and try again. But I get the same thing. In fact, nothing that I try leads me to a solution (the addition of /usr/local/cuda/lib64 to the ld "attempt list"). Yes, I tried "export LD_LIB..."

Hoping for an explanation. Am I doing something wrong??
