Ubuntu Installation Frozen on Language Select Screen MacBook Pro

I am unable to install Ubuntu on my MacBook Pro. I have it written to a USB drive, and I get up to the language select screen before everything just freezes. Cursor won't move as I use the touchpad, arrow keys won't work, keyboard doesn't respond, nothing. Not sure how to fix this since I can't even install anything. When I try to "try Ubuntu without installing", the same thing happens on the desktop. No response from the OS whatsoever, it just freezes.

Welcome to Ask Ubuntu. I know nothing about running Ubuntu on a mac sorry, but on any system I verify my download before writing, then verify the write (to thumb-drive) using the 'verify option' or using another system. You may not have another mac, but did you verify download checksums? (tutorials.ubuntu.com/tutorial/tutorial-how-to-verify-ubuntu#0) when i see a strange logo of a man in circle to right of ?? I hit space, and a menu appears allowing me to "check disc for defects"; the option is there but can be accessed slightly differently for different releases/flavors
